Medieval History Weekend

This event has been cancelled, to be rescheduled for April 2021.

In 2020 Canterbury Christ Church University presents the city’s hugely popular biennial Medieval History Weekend, supported by the Cathedral and by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust.

With an international audience, it will showcase the most recent cutting-edge research on the Middle Ages.

Expect guided tours, special exhibitions, and lectures from local experts and popular historians alike. Speakers will include Professors Diarmaid MacCulloch, and Paul Bennett MBE; Cressida Williams, Head of the Cathedral’s Archives and Library, will be leading tours of our own medieval Archives and Library collections.

Highlights will include Professor Caroline Barron’s lecture ‘Becket was a Londoner’. It will explore how the influence of St Thomas permeated city life in medieval London until Henry VIII ordered the destruction of his shrine and the removal of his name from all liturgical books. Yet 850 years after his death, St Thomas the Martyr is still remembered. Tickets available here.
